A smooth Japan visa application process requires clear understanding of the step-by-step lodging procedure as well as the necessary set of the documents. We advise you to apply for a visa approximately 1 month in advance, but not earlier than 3 months. Usually, a visa is issued for a period of 3 months. However, for some types of Japan visa its validity can be 1 month or less; in this case it would be advisable to apply 2 weeks prior to your trip.

Check if you are required to obtain a visa to Japan or whether your nationality falls into one of the Countries and regions with visa exemption arrangement with Japan.
The Japanese Embassy accepts applications from Malaysia passport holders or foreigners who are holding a long-term residence in Malaysia Visa (Dependent Pass, Student Pass, Employment Pass, Work Permit and Long-Term Visit Pass).
Short-term residents, tourists and temporary visitors have to apply for a visa in Japanese Consulate or Embassy of their home countries. Exceptions are provided to foreigners holding an original Certificate of Eligibility issued by the Ministry of Justice of Japan whereby a person can apply for a visa to Japan even being a short-term visitor in Malaysia.
Please check whether you have at least two empty pages in your passport and it is valid for at least 6 months from the date of exiting Japan. Also your current residential address within Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Malacca, Pahang, Johor.
Once everything has been checked and you qualify for the previous 3 steps,

Malaysian nationals holding biometric passport compliance with ICAO standard do not need visa to enter Japan for a short term stay not more than 90 days if your purpose of visit is for tourism, transit, business meeting, visiting friends and relatives in Japan.
The Government of Japan implemented visa exemption for Malaysia nationals holding biometric passport compliance with ICAO standard since July 2013. From our understanding, all passports issued by the Malaysia government both in Malaysia and foreign missions abroad are all ICAO compliant by end of January 2017.

Original letter from College/ University stating your current status, course taken, duration of course, date and purpose of journey (University letter should be printed on University letterhead with original signature of the person in charged. 10. Examination result & Attendance record from university (exempted for Masters and PhD students)
* If your trip is being sponsored by one of your parents, please provide (a) Latest 3 months bank statement of parents, (refer to Item No. 5) (b) Document to proof relationship such birth certificate/ family registration copy (c) Original letter from one of your parents stating the purpose of travel, date of travel and sponsorship of trip with original signature (d) copy of parent’s passport.
